I don’t consider myself a poet, more of a lyricist. I was told once that you can’t get into any modern poetry publications with poems that rhyme. But rhyming in lyrics works. In my younger days, when I was trying to convince myself I could play guitar, I’d write songs and they had one thing in common. The lyrics were pretty good but the music and singing were far less than pretty good. Over the years I’ve worked with some musicians to put my lyrics to music. One of my many writing projects is a rock opera titled An Unsafe Place: A Love Story I’m slowly working towards getting produced. The main character is a poet and his poetry does rhyme because… no one gets to tell you if your art is art. You decide if your art is art. No one has to agree with you. It sure helps the ego if they do but that is just a bonus. Some of that poetry and preliminary recordings for the rock opera are here.
The following are poems are from the character Guy Tucker poem in the rock opera An Unsafe Place: A Love Story
There once was a foolish king
Who ruled a vast land
His grandiose vision
Was forged in the past of man
The following are songs written by Will Holcomb:
You and me – can’t you see
Are in a world – of peculiarity
Black’s not white – ‘cept for Thursday night
Oh, the moon is bright – and all is right
Small Town Eats was part of the Songs of Smithville compilation album. The lyrics are mine and musicians are, Jeff Haney, Barney Sledge, Geno Gottschall, Nico Leophonte.
